Endorsements

Candidate endorsements are a method of building political engagement in candidates, building political power in the legislature, and educating elected officials on our issues statewide. Candidates endorsed by the Washington Housing Alliance share our commitment to ensuring a safe, healthy, affordable home for everyone in Washington.

Our Endorsement Process

We make questionnaires available to candidates who must return them by a given deadline. Endorsement Committee members, key staff members, and regional community partners discuss the completed questionnaires, providing input/comment. Recommendations for or against endorsement are considered from these groups, and are then presented to the Housing Alliance Board for approval.

The Washington Housing Alliance endorses candidates for public office who will be effective champions for housing justice - including protecting and expanding tenants' rights, increasing funding for affordable housing, and enacting policies that prevent and end homelessness.

The period for completing our candidate questionnaire for 2026 has passed. If you are a state legislative candidate and would like us to still consider an endorsement or you are running for another office, please contact us. Initiatives

No: I-645 (repealing the millionaires tax)

Washington cannot solve our affordable housing and homelessness crisis without the resources to do it. We need a strong state budget to build and preserve affordable homes, keep people from becoming homeless, and fund the services that help people get and stay housed. The millionaires tax moves us closer to having the revenue we need by asking those with annual incomes over $1 million to contribute more. I-645 would repeal that tax and take billions of dollars out of the state budget in the years ahead. Voters should reject I-645 and protect the resources Washington needs to make real progress on solving the affordable housing and homelessness crisis.

For many young people, schools are a place of stability, safety, and resources, especially when they may not have those things at home. These initiatives would make schools less safe and welcoming for LGBTQ+ students, increasing the risk that some young people will leave or be pushed out of their homes and experience homelessness or housing instability.

They could also make entire families feel unsafe or unwelcome in their communities. Families may face the impossible choice of staying in a place where they have roots and can afford to live or moving somewhere they feel safer but where housing costs may put their financial stability at risk.

At a time when Washington is already facing an affordable housing and homelessness crisis, we should be working to keep young people and families safe, stable, and housed, not adopting policies that put that stability at greater risk.
